The renowned evolutionary biologist and outspoken atheist Richard Dawkins is much in demand in 2009, the year which marks both the bicentenary of Charles Darwin’s birth, and the 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of the Species. He joins us on screen to talk about why Charles Darwin’s work was so significant, and update us on the Theory of Evolution as it stands in 2009. Richard Dawkins has a new book due out later this year, The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution. Dawkins will also announce the winner of the Royal Society of New Zealand’s inaugural Science Book Prize during this event.

Sean Plunket will be in the interviewer’s seat on stage. There will be an opportunity to put your questions to Mr Dawkins at the end of the event. If you have a question you’d like answered, please send it direct to the festival office. Email your questions for Richard Dawkins to: info@writersfestival.co.nz before Sunday 10 May with DAWKINS in the subject line.

This event is a first in New Zealand: a videoconference making direct use of the űber academic networks of JANET (UK) and KAREN (NZ). Our heartfelt thanks go the good people at TelstraClear, the Royal Society of New Zealand, JANET and KAREN, and – of course, to Richard Dawkins for making himself available for this special event.
