One of the most popular events of the festival, the New Zealand Listener Opening Night offers up a smorgasboard of lyrical, luminary and spellbinding writers. This year Australian supremo David Malouf returns with a spectacular new novel Ransom. We welcome back to Auckland Orange Prize-winning Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who visits with her new short story collection The Thing Around Your Neck. Tash Aw, author of the stunning The Harmony Silk Factory, recently published his second novel Map of the Invisible World. Monica Ali’s hugely popular first novel Brick Lane has since been followed by two others – most recently In The Kitchen. Also sharing the stage is Melbournite Christos Tsiolkas, whose novel The Slap has caused quite a buzz since publication. Join our distinguished guests for an hour and a half of inspired readings. Chair: Mark Sainsbury.
