'Alter Ego' is a documentary film about graffiti artists from around the world, and features Auckland's own ASKEW. It opens in cinemas on the 21st of May, but we are hosting a premiere screening Thursday 7 May at 6:30pm.
Prior to the premiere we have organised for a live graffiti art demonstration from 4:30pm until 6:30pm. The canvas for this art work will be the Dargaville High School's bus, which is an old dunger in much need of a new paint job - they affectionately call it 'Mr Whippy.'
ASKEW and the rest of the TMD Crew will be the artists offering their services in the painting of the bus, and from what we have seen of their work (http://askew1.com/) it should be pretty impressive.
There is a lot of negative press to do with graffiti and it seems to be a very divisive subject area. We have had dramas with the Auckland City Council in organising this event, because of their 'zero tolerance' policy on graffiti. They denied our application to park the bus opposite the cinema, without recognising that this is really a commissioned work of art rather than illegal tagging of public property! Fortunately the City Library have granted us permission to park the bus in their loading area on Rutland Street, just around the corner from our entrance.
