Joanne Drayton's work focuses on New Zealand women artists and their struggle to produce work and survive in an often unsympathetic environment. Her lives include Edith Collier, the brilliant Wanganui artist who was recalled from Europe to nurse her ailing mother, whose father burnt many of her paintings, and who never painted experimentally again. Frances Hodgkin's pioneering life showed the way for generations of women artists. In this event, Joanne will concentrate on her recent biography of the enigmatic crime queen Ngaio Marsh - the woman with the most masculine voice in history - which was conceived as a form of mystery itself. Why did she go to such lengths to conceal her intimate life from the public eye? An illustrated event with images not published in the book. Chair: Director of the Centre for New Zealand Art Research and Discovery Linda Tyler.
