Known to us as the author of many novels, memorably the much-loved Oracles and Miracles, Stevan is also a respected historian. Whether studying colonial New Zealand’s attitudes towards drugs and sex in Pleasures of the Flesh, or dissecting part of his own heritage, the landed classes of the South Island, Stevan has established his position as one of our most exciting contemporary writers of history by producing histories as swiftly told as tales. His new history Diggers, Hatters and Whores is an illustrated account of gold mining in New Zealand. Conceived as a Victorian volume, it is beautifully illustrated with images of this most transitory world: where once entire towns stood, there might be just a single cow, a gravestone and a paddock. Who can resist a whore, a hatter or a digger? An illustrated talk, introduced by Peter Simpson.
