Website:
Malaya during the death throes of the British Empire was a fascinating place, much visited by writers like Maugham and Cocteau. Tash Aw distils some of its distinctly jangly energy in The Harmony Silk Factory, tracking its history and mystery through the eyes of three narrators: the disillusioned son of a Chinese-Malaysian businessman of poor repute but a redoubtable survivor; his beautiful upper-class wife who keeps a diary; and a languid Englishman who accompanies the businessman, his wife and a Japanese spy on a sea voyage. Tash Aw’s first novel was celebrated by many awards, including the 2005 Whitbread Award for Best First Novel. It has since been translated into seventeen languages. Tash Aw has just brought out his eagerly awaited second novel, Map of the Invisible World. Chair: Paula Morris.
