Stephanie Johnson’s writing runs the gamut from fierce satire to emotionally involving historical fiction, often conceived on an epic scale. She writes poetry, short stories, plays, television drama and film, and in a secret life she once acted alongside Michael Hutchence in a now forgotten film. In her latest novel, Swimmers’ Rope, an Edwardian Auckland emerges, newly minted but entirely recognisable. Her tone ranges from the whimsical and wicked to the anger of the excluded; her writing is characterised by warmth, empathy, a fierce intelligence, an ability to evince a ripple of laughter in the dark. Without her, this festival would not exist. Festival Founder Stephanie Johnson talks with Kate De Goldi.
