Monica Ali’s first novel Brick Lane was critically acclaimed on publication and became an international bestseller. Following publication, the book raised some degree of controversy about the portrayal of Bangladesh immigrants to Britain. Monica spoke eloquently and strongly about the creation of her fictional characters and in support of the rights of all novelists – and the book went on to be short-listed for the 2003 Man Booker Prize. This year sees the publication of a new novel, In the Kitchen, a murder mystery. In the cellar of an expensive, elegant hotel a body is discovered - with skilful plotting, Monica peels away the layers of polyglot London. Chair: Kirsty Gunn.
