Only in Pakistan, America’s erstwhile ally, could a boy go from riding a bike to flying a jet in the bat of an eyelash. Mohammed Hanif deploys some of this gusto in his novel A Case of Exploding Mangoes, which describes events at the end of the military government of General Zia ul-Haq. He died, if you remember, in a plane crash – a plan loaded earlier with crates of mangoes. Described as gleefully dark, satirical and an ‘assassination novel’ to put alongside The Day of the Jackal, it is more than that. It is a love letter to opponents of a condemned régime, slightly mad, very funny and acute in its criticisms. Behind the manic humour lies a real and frequently dangerous history. Hanif is currently the BBC’s Special Reporter in Pakistan. Chair: TV3’s Ali Ikram.
