Martin Edmond stole his way quietly into articulating something rare and strange about the antipodean condition. His prose is playful yet rings true. No less an authority than J.M. Coetzee - a man known for his bark - described Martin’s Luca Antara as ‘a graceful and mesmerising blend of history, autobiography, travel and romance.’ This coup caps off a brilliant run of writing in which Edmond established the tone of his own voice: inimitable, intimate, wise, occasionally wise-cracking. Most of all, it shines the light of a fierce yet compassionate intelligence on the conundrum of being an accidental tourist in this peculiar part of the world. His latest work, The Supply Party, takes us across outback Australia with the German painter and scientist, Ludwig Becker, on the ill-fated Burke and Wills expedition of 1860-61. Chair: fellow memoirist Peter Wells.
