The financial pages are often a thinly disguised amalgam of puff, demi-fiction disguised as authority and, as it turns out, deflectors away from outright fraud. The importance of a sane, level, intelligent voice in this brouhaha cannot be overestimated. James Surowiecki’s frequently droll ‘Financial Page’ in The New Yorker packs a punch as it chronicles devastating greed, mendacity and forms of behaviour more peculiar to the last days of the Weimar Republic. But he also explains the enigma which grips every one of us: how does the economy work? What is the hidden meaning behind often obtuse financial terms? His book Wisdom of Crowds hypothesised that groups of people have greater intelligence than the lone intellectual. As we head over the precipice, we await further information. Chair: Lewis Holden.
