Hendrik Hertzberg’s credentials include revitalizing The New Yorker under Tina Brown into the quintessential must-read magazine for literature and opinion. Now a senior editor, staff writer and the magazine’s chief political commentator, he originally joined the New Yorker in 1969 after serving as an officer in the U.S. Navy. He left the magazine to be President Jimmy Carter’s chief speechwriter from 1979 until 1981, served two terms as editor of The New Republic, and returned to the New Yorker in 1992. He is one of America’s most knowledgeable commentators on politics, both current and historic, and has had an avid and active interest in the electoral system, politics and its susceptibility to the perils of human nature since he was a young boy. He joins Jon Johansson for a conversation which promises to be as wide-ranging as it is thought-provoking.
