There is always a beautiful calm in David Malouf’’s prose, even when it involves disturbing events like the life of the lost boy, as in Remembering Babylon. Partly it is the sense of control of a master-story teller spinning a yarn. The reader awaits with anticipation the next, brilliantly executed turn of the plot. But one comes back to this sense of tone - beautifully centred, modest yet as far reaching as the curve on the horizon at sunset. Malouf established himself as one of the great Australian writers with award-winning novels and short stories. Now he is simply himself, a writer from the periphery who has become part of the central narrative of what it is to be human today. Chair: Iain Sharp.
