Still in her early thirties, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s literary career has been a glittering whirlwind of success. With her second novel Half of a Yellow Sun, she won the 2007 Orange Broadband Prize for Fiction – becoming both the youngest ever and also the first ever African winner. Chimamanda has published essays in such luminary publications as the New Yorker, The Guardian and The Observer. She joins us with her first collection of short stories The Thing Around Your Neck. The title story concerns a young Nigerian girl who wins the American Visa Lottery and leaves for a new life, where she falls in love with a blond Trust Fund kid whose mother teaches Women’s Studies. Studded with laugh-aloud and poignant contrasts between the Nigerian and the American experience, the collection is Chimamanda’s most intimate work to date. Chair: Paula Morris.
