This is a rare opportunity to join in the celebrations for the prestigious 2009 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize, where the overall winners of the Best First Book Award and the Best Book Award will be announced. The Best First Book finalists are: Mohammed Hanif (Pakistan) with A Case of Exploding Mangoes; Mo Zhi Hong (New Zealand) with The Year of the Shanghai Shark; Uwem Akpan (Nigeria) with Say You’re One of Them; and Joan Thomas (Canada) with Reading by Lightning. The Best Book finalists are: Christos Tsiolkas (Australia) with The Slap; Jhumpha Lahiri* (United Kingdom) with Unaccustomed Earth; Mandla Langa (South Africa) with The Lost Colours of The Chameleon; and Marina Endicott (Canada) with Good to a Fault. The Chair of the Judges, Nicholas Hasluck, Director of the Commonwealth Foundation Mark Collins, Head of the Macquarie Group Foundation Julie White, and the 2007 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize Best Book winner Lloyd Jones will be on hand to congratulate this year’s winners, who will read from their award-winning books.
