Legendary international jazz musicians and an outstanding homegrown selection have been added to the final programme of the new biennial Wellington Jazz Festival 2009.

Musicians from Cuba, Germany and Brazil to Tunisia, France and New Zealand feature alongside six headliners from North America and Poland, such as Mingus Big Band and trumpeter Tomasz Stańko, first announced in December.

More than 75 international artists from 11 countries along with over a hundred New Zealand musicians will present a total of 24 shows and workshops in a jazz hub centered on Civic Square. A specially built jazz club Pacific Blue Note in the Wellington Town Hall will showcase jazz around the clock, and a free series of jazz shows is planned for an outdoor stage in Civic Square.

Wellington Jazz Festival Artistic Director, Lissa Twomey says, “The diversity and breadth of talent is unprecedented for a jazz festival in New Zealand. Some of the world’s finest musicians, the majority playing in New Zealand for the first time, will hang out in Wellington venues with audiences, thinking, feeling and talking jazz.”

Check out the other listings here on Eventfinder for full details on each of the shows.

We play jazz at least every Sunday morning. Good coffee in hand, I close my eyes and am right back in the Preservation Hall, French Quarter New Orleans where we had an awesome two weeks several years ago.

Jazz is experimentation. It's discovery. It's exploring the unknown by combining parts of the known.

Forget everything after the swing era. Jazz is hot - 1920s style. Birth of a new genre.

Jazz to me is a lazy romantic candle lit meal for two. It tends to always be the back drop for romance and certainly has a big place in my relationship.

Jazz is my mood music - it moves me spiritually and physically - you can't stop yourself from keeping time with the rythm/beat . It is inspirative - it can turn dull moment into a bright one.

The best jazz is free-flowing with great talent displayed by all the musicians. Used to be played in small smoky rooms but no longer in New Zealand thankfully. Not bound by copyright laws, current or proposed. Expression of feeling at that moment.

What does good jazz mean to me?
Its when you go to a jazz concert and see the passion with which the musicians play their music. I forget about wher I am and get transfixed by the musicians and the music...time seems to stand still... or fly..or spin...or groove!

Jazz is my dad's old Dave Brubeck LP collection that I wasn't supposed to touch. Jazz is The Green Mill and forbidden sounds in old school Chicago. Jazz is world music that marches to the beat of a different sax, drummer, bassist and keyboardist... who somehow manage to fuse it all together. Jazz is smooth for Sunday morning brunch...

After reading all the comments so far I really almost feel that I don't know what it is and it's been too long since I have heard some - somethign I need to rectify?
But what I do know is it is relaxing music and great to chill out to and have a wine while listening to and to loose yourself in it. Usually the singers are great and have so much uniqueness and feeling and depth to their voices and smoothness. But also the music is beautiful and sends you on a journey that makes you feel better after you have listened to it - uplifted but like you have experienced depth too. The atmosphere at these concerts is great and I especially imagine it in the Summer but jazz can be great anytime of year as a mellower. Yes the improvisation and freedom from the restrictions is a great part of what it's all about! :)

Jazz is a dimly lit smokey room filled with rhythm and a glass of iced brandy.

Jazz to me is a paradox. A melody can soothe me or excite me; an improvisation can surprise me or shock me; the freedom expressed in the music can inspire me or conquer my thoughts. Jazz to me is a feeling of life.

There is no wrong note in Jazz, it it a combination of melodies with stepping stones that give Jazz a unique feeling and distinguishes itself from any other genre. Jazz resonates funk and feeling, its not soppy or romatic, its raw emotion that fuels the flame of the music created.

I'm not sure of modern jazz, and I don't know if Acker Bilk qualifies, but he and his jazzmen were great. Another favourite of mine is Cleo Laine and John Danksworth - both get into your skin and the effect of such smoothness is chilling.

Jazz is a broad beast that cannot be defined by rigid rules and form. It is fluid and evolves into something that hits all your senses and moves you.

What is Jazz? How can a musical expression be defined in words, well, that's the difficult part. Whenever I think Jazz, I think feeling. I think calm, smooth groove= feeling. It is a music to be felt. It must lower the blood pressur.e I know Jazz can be jazzy (which is also a great adjective, as in describing a great pair of pants or a great thing), as in moving and very quick, which is great for the dancing part of a day or evening, meeting people through dance is the best thing and the way I have met the best people I know. Jazz from a cool, slow, smooth point of view transcends you into a place of pre-sleep, the most relaxed one can be, but yet still alert. A point of acute feeling before the break. It's feel good music, that's what jazz is; who doesn't feel great listening to it?
