Walk2Work is an event which encourages the people of Aotearoa to get out there, leave the car behind and walk to work, or utilise public transport for part of their journey and walk the rest. The health benefits of walking are commonly known these days but walking to work can also save you money, help save our environment and get you mentally prepared for your day ahead.

Walk2Work is an event created by Living Streets Aotearoa. Living Streets is the pedestrian and walking advocacy organisation for New Zealand.

Living Streets aims to roll out Walk 2 Work Day in 2009 to areas with Walking User Groups or other organisations or businesses keen to hold an event. In 2010 we will organise a national Walk 2 Work Day. Walk 2 Work Day events will be promoted by Living Streets.

Walk 2 Work Day is a free event held before work in a location close to the main walking routes, targeting people who have walked all or part of the way to work.

Options for a Walk 2 Work event could include:
- A ‘centralised’ event, with breakfast snacks, information, and possibly entertainment and guest speakers, all taking place at one central location.
- A 'minimal decentralised event', with people handing snacks/information/freebies to walkers at one site, or a few roadside sites.
- A 'decentralised' event based around workplaces, for instance workplaces with travel plans in place, where the Workplace Travel Planner could be the central contact point.

TARGET MARKETS

Walkers - men and women aged 25-50 who work in professional positions around the centre of major cities and towns. Earning between $38K-$60K. They choose to walk as a way of getting their 30mins a day, they are a one car household and lead reasonably active lives but aren't marathon runners! They are health and environmentally conscious, enjoy good quality foods and beverages but aren't overly meticulous about this.

Non-Walkers - men and women aged 23-35 who lead very busy lives both at work and socially. They use their car everyday as a mean to move quickly around the city. Financially they have a good level of disposable income but most will carry some debt (in the form of hire purchases and credit cards). They are still setting themselves up and rent accommodation. They are conscious that they probably aren't getting enough exercise so they are a member at a gym but don't make it more then twice a week.

Employers - who are health and environment conscious. This group want to be seen to be taking care of their staff and have a well-being (or similar) programme (or theme) running through their organisation. They would like to encourage staff interaction and unity and see Walk 2 Work as a cheap way of achieving this. They mainly come from the health, banking, finance, government department, insurance sectors and corporate sectors.
