The Museum of Wellington gets fired up this autumn with the opening of its new feature exhibition Shaped By Hand – 1957-2009 NZ Potters Inc. on the 4th of March.

This major retrospective profiles the dynamic New Zealand ceramic scene and presents works from 50 national exhibitions held by New Zealand Potters Inc. With a diverse range of works on display, visitors will see stunning examples of ceramic styles and will be given an insight into how New Zealand pottery has developed over the years.

Museum of Wellington Director Brett Mason says ‘this exhibition is a way of telling the story of the development of pottery from a social history viewpoint as well as an aesthetic one.’

On-site demonstrations by acclaimed potters, every Wednesday and Saturday throughout the exhibition, will give visitors the chance to learn the different processes and techniques used to create these beautiful works of art.

Kids can also design, create and glaze their own ceramic pieces in Sunday workshops throughout April and May and a ‘Raku Firing’ on Saturday 4 April will provide the public with the opportunity to purchase and fire up their own work of art.

With tangible objects and audio-visual displays - including ‘The Incredible Shapeshifter’ a short ‘claymation’ film by local artist Alejandro Davila - this exhibition will appeal to all ages.
