Tokotoko, the autumn 2009 exhibition at Russell Museum/Te Whare Taonga o Kororareka, explores the not-so-humble walking stick. Recognized as a symbol for human frailty and wisdom, Tokotoko re-positions the walking stick to consider its beautifully simple form and the mark of the maker. Some visitors to the exhibition remark on their experiences with and memories of walking sticks, while others share its use and form particular to their country. The Tokotoko exhibition is growing as local people bring in their walking sticks, talk about them and add them to the exhibition. Visitors are contributing information about their personal experiences with tokotoko in the Tokotoko Book.
