Dragon boat racing has ancient Chinese origins; its history has been traced back more than 2000 years. Today this high-energy power sport is paddled in over 65 countries.
For the first time, the clear waters of Rotorua’s Blue Lake will host the NZ national championships. Over 80
national teams will compete in the two-day event.
Each team comprises 25 paddlers in a 40-foot boat with a drummer and helm. Each team will paddle frantically as they race the other teams down the 500m course.
The drums, shouting and colourful boats make it an impressive and exciting sport to watch and compete in. The New Zealand Dragon Boat Association is honoured to have this event in Rotorua, so come along and see one of the fastest-growing paddle sports in action.
