Can Maori artworks using plastic, PVC, computer parts and fibreglass rather than timber, flax and greenstone still retain their cultural integrity? Is synthetic still authentic?

Plastic Maori examines the commodification and mass production of Māori taonga (treasures), with art works including kowhaiwhai lightboxes, plastic hei tiki, tukutuku puzzle cubes, jewellery, streetwear and even NZ’s most famous plastic Māori – Manu from Playschool.

On 18-19 April, visitors can jump like the Easter bunny into Inez Crawford’s Bouncy Marae in TheNewDowse courtyard.

Public programmes include floor talks with artists Dr Robert Jahnke and Hemi MacGregor, and flax workshops in association with WEA. See www.huttcitywea.co.nz for booking details.

Well that all depends. The hei tiki is that machine pressed or carved? It changes the price tag from a couple bux to a couple hundred bux. Art is what YOU think it i0s not anyone else. Has anyone been to the art gallery recently the new one in Auckland? That's some out there sorta stuff in there which I myself would hardly call 'art' but someone out there obviously does and that is their representation of it not mine.

I don't see a problem bringing new materials into our culture.
I'm probably gonna get beats but Maori culture needs to come out of the dark ages. Cherish your whakapapa and learn the lessons but there's just some things we just gotta let go and move on with.
