Eroica Trio

Opening the 2009 Concert Season on a full nationwide tour, Chamber Music New Zealand is delighted to present the return of New York’s Eroica Trio. Their debut New Zealand tour in 2003 packed out halls around the country and had critics ecstatic in their praise.

The Eroica Trio performs in Invercargill on Monday 23 March at the Civic Theatre.

Featuring pianist Erika Nickrenz, violinist Susie Park and cellist Sara Sant'Ambrogio, all three women are top-ranked award-winning soloists, and last year the trio celebrated their 20th anniversary. Sara and Erika have been playing together since they were 12 years old, and Australian violinist Susie Park joined in 2006 replacing Adele Pena. The trio released a disc of all-American music, their eighth recording for EMI, in late 2008.

The programme for Invercargill features Felix Mendelssohn's Piano Trio No 1 in D minor, a firm chamber music favourite with its sweeping romanticism and melting melodies, and it is performed to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Mendelssohn’s birth.

The classical intensity of Mendelssohn is mirrored by the music of Édouard Lalo and contrasts with the flair of Paul Schoenfield, whose Café Music is by turns sassy, bluesy and totally American. Rounding out the programme is Villa Lobos’ stunning Aria arranged especially for the Eroica Trio by composer Raimundo Penaforte .
