An exhibition of original corsets by Jo Drysdall of local corsetry label Bastet Creations. Works include unique corsetry, costumes, accessories and sculpture inspired by Victorian, Edwardian, and modern gothic and steampunk fashions.
The exhibition particularly explores the fantasy world of steampunk, a film and literary genre in which Victorian aesthetics and technology meet science fiction innovation and adventure. In this context the corset is not only synonymous with elegance and refinement but also becomes symbolic of strength and daring – the armour of the steampunk adventuress.
The exhibition also includes steel and leather work by Sebastian Denize, sculpture by Jocelyn Drysdall and jewellery by Rachel Rowlands.
About Bastet Creations
Jo Drysdall began making corsets more than ten years ago and now produces unique corsetry under the label Bastet Creations. What started as a foray down a side-path in her historical research and costuming soon became a passion. In the intervening years she has researched and experimented, refining her corset-making skills and techniques to produce corsets that are strong, beautiful and as individual as their wearers.
Jo draws her designs from throughout history, from the Elizabethan period to the 20th century. Her corsets range from exacting historical replicas to modern formal wear and wearable-arts pieces. In 2006 she staged an exhibition of her work entitled "Body Construct" at The Christchurch Arts Centre, which attracted more than 3000 visitors. The following year she displayed work at Christchurch's Gothic Masquerade Ball and Gothic Punk group exhibition and staged a travelling exhibition of corsets around the Christchurch City Libraries' network. She also gives lectures and shows about historical and modern corsetry and in 2008 presented a talk and catwalk show about corsetry through the ages at the Christchurch Art Gallery as part of the lecture series associated with the William Morris exhibition.
