Come to the biggest musical party of Auckland Festival 2009. An afternoon of free music and a market village in Queen Street culminates in the first New Zealand performance of Sing Sing - a celebration in dance, colour and song for the whole family by Wantok Musik Foundation.
The Queen Street Sing Sing is the biggest musical party of Auckland Festival 2009 and a highlight of the Festival’s opening weekend. Sing Sing is a series of concerts that, since the mid-‘90s, has brought together many of Oceania’s most important and accomplished singers, musicians, and dancers.
Sing Sing honours the peoples and songlines of Oceania, taking audiences on an exhilarating journey through the landscape and texture of both urban and grassroots village life. Traditional and contemporary musical forms are blended, from downbeat acoustic soul to tear-jerking ballads, with slit log drumming, choral vocals and sublime world fusion grooves.
State of the art projections and aural soundscapes, add to the spectacle. Part of Queen Street will be closed off on Saturday 7 March, for a late afternoon/early evening (from 4pm) market village that will feature a line-up of performances from leading contemporary artists. The main event, Sing Sing, kicks off at 7.30pm. Celebrate Auckland Festival 2009 with this spectacular free outdoor performance.
Auckland Festival 2009 brings the city alive next March with a dazzling programme of more than 200 arts and entertainment events, packed into eighteen exciting days. The biennial festival is a feast of theatre, dance, concerts, cabaret, exhibitions, family events and more, featuring some of the finest national and international artists and companies.
