Eugene Ionesco’s, absurdist masterpiece, The Chairs, is a treat for both theatre enthusiasts and Francophiles. Two characters, an old man and old woman, arrange chairs for a series of invisible guests who are invited to hear an orator reveal the old man’s discovery of the meaning of life. The message is left with the orator, but he is a deaf-mute and cannot relay it. Ionesco's idea that we lack the ability to communicate anything meaningful to one another is a rich source of both tragedy and farce. Written in 1952, The Chairs has been an audience favourite in recent revivals in London and New York. For Auckland Festival 2009 The Chairs will be performed both in English and the original French. (IMPORTANT: Performances for The Chairs will be in EITHER English or French. Please check with Ticketing Agent when booking tickets.)

Auckland Festival 2009 brings the city alive next March with a dazzling programme of more than 200 arts and entertainment events, packed into eighteen exciting days. The biennial festival is a feast of theatre, dance, concerts, cabaret, exhibitions, family events and more, featuring some of the finest national and international artists and companies.
