Post Gay by Patrick Graham confirmed at BATS for Wellington Fringe Festival
(25th – 28th Feb), and Galatos for Auckland Fringe Festival (10th –
13th Mar)

Patrick Graham has secured a spot at BATS for the Wellington Fringe Festival and a
fortnight later in Auckland at Galatos for the inaugural Auckland Fringe
Festival, for his new work, Post Gay.

The self-proclaimed “Ed Wood of theatre”, caused a stir in the Auckland theatre community and the gay community earlier this year with his controversial play, White Trash Omnibus. Many Wellingtonians encouraged the playwright to tour the work in question so that they could see “what all the fuss was about”.

Well, the Wellington theatre-goers aren’t getting “Trashed” yet, but they will be treated to the premiere performance of the new work from Mr Graham. A comedy that could be described as a “sex comedy”, or even - one step further - as a “gay sex comedy”, Post Gay is a multimedia production that tells the story of a “notstereotypical” gay man searching for love over the internet.

After years of being single, Matthew is encouraged by his “sunny disposition” flatmate to take the plunge with internet dating. Matthew is played by Todd Morgan – a Unitec graduate whose credits include Les Miserables, Shortland Street, King Kong, Ian the Antichrist and several Smackbang Theatre projects.

Cecilia, Matthew’s flatmate, is played by Natasha Ross. As well as several short film and television roles, Natasha has performed in the London Fringe and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and was recently seen in New Zealand in Beast by award-winning playwright, Thomas Sainsbury.

The audience is taken on Matthew’s journey with him through the screen projections displaying his online interactions, and witnessing the resulting “physical” meetings with these characters. These characters are all played by the wonderfully diverse Rudi Vodanovich - a fellow Unitec graduate who has appeared in the Auckland Theatre Company productions of Shrew'd and Equus. He has also appeared on Outrageous Fortune and the upcoming TV series Go-girls.

After three dating disasters, including a mysterious event manager who forgets his own name and occupation frequently, and a Muscle Mary who tells Matthew he is good enough to give a blow job but that’s about it, Matthew turns to traditional meeting places; clubs and, er… phone dating services. The results are even more hilarious than the online dating, which leads poor Matthew to absolute despair. Will he find love out there in the real world? Will he go back into cyberspace for another shot?

Post Gay will be on at BATS theatre as part of the New Zealand Fringe Festival 2009 in
Wellington from 25 th – 28 th February (shows at 9.30pm), and at Galatos as part of the inaugural Auckland Fringe Festival from 10th – 13th March (shows
at 7.30pm).

Don’t miss out on the next play from the playwright who one critic described as the
“Tennessee Williams of New Zealand theatre”. David Herkt gaynz.com
