Collaboration and cross-pollination between local and international artists and curators is a strong characteristic of the 2009 programme. New Zealand work will sit alongside that of international artists in two major group exhibitions. F for Fake and MASH UP.
Cultural translation and representation are the subject of MASH UP, curated by Julia Rodrigues (Brazil), an independent curator and art critic based in São Paulo and Copenhagen. She asks how much of one culture can be communicated by words originally from another? Rodrigues will bring together work by local and international artists to examine differences, representation, coexistence, frontiers, specific context, cultural translation and authorship. Her influences include Walter Benjamin’s The Task of the Translator and Brazilian poet Haroldo de Campos. MASH UP is one of two simultaneous exhibitions looking at cultural translation that Rodrigues is organising for the first trimester of 2009, the second will be in São Paulo. Artists include: Finn Ferrier, Shigeyuki Kihara, Copenhagen Brains to Copyshop, Andreas Johnsen/Ralf Christensen/Henrik Moltke, Carla Zaccagnini, Shimabuku and Detanico and Lain among others.
Exhibition runs from Saturday 7 March to Saturday 21 March
Tuesday – Friday 10.00am – 6.00pm
Saturday, 11.00am - 4.00pm
Preview, Friday 6 March 6.00pm - 8.00pm
