Leila Adu is playing at The Festival Club, part of Red Square - the heart of Auckland Festival 2009; a multi-venue hub based in the Aotea Centre precinct, incorporating The Famous Spiegeltent, the Festival Club, and the Stella Artois Festival Bar. With easy access to The Civic, the Town Hall, Aotea Centre, SkyCity Theatre and the Basement (home to The Fringe), Red Square is the Festival party zone — the place to start and end a day of festival experiences.

“Her voice moved from the absolutely sublime and sensitive to the sultry depths… Listening to Adu is like being exposed to something elemental.” – Salient Magazine

Leila Adu returns to New Zealand from an adulatory reception in Europe and the United States and a growing international reputation. With a voice like hot treacle on broken glass she explores the dissonant edges of familiar forms. She has recently recorded a new solo album in Chicago with the legendary Steve Albini (PJ Harvey, Nirvana). Seductive and sultry, her vocal range and style will produce shivers down your spine, goosebumps on your arms and draw you inexorably into a state of rarefied musical intoxication.

Two fantastic concerts, one solo and one with band.

Auckland Festival 2009 brings the city alive next March with a dazzling programme of more than 200 arts and entertainment events, packed into eighteen exciting days. The biennial festival is a feast of theatre, dance, concerts, cabaret, exhibitions, family events and more, featuring some of the finest national and international artists and companies.

The sound of birds in the bush and the fragrance of trees makes for me a sense of intoxication. There is so much noise going on in our world, but it is other peoples' busy-ness and I don't feel involved, but with the birds and the bush, it is hard to divorce yourself from this wonderment of nature, and I feel so happy to be alive.

I live in a really noisy raucous house-share situation so, for me, the most intoxicating sound is... silence! I absolutely revel in rare moments of luscious silence. Then, when I am really chilled out, I slowly begin again to hear the tiny sounds of nature - a breath of wind, the rustle of leaves, the patter of light rain - that so often go unnoticed. Intoxicating!

Pink Flloyd's Dark side of the moon is the most intoxicating sound I have heard. It can transport you back in time - just close your eyes and be wherever you want to be, in whatever state you wish to be.

Intoxicating sounds: the deep rumble of my beloved's teasing laughter. young children giggling. a rain storm from the warmth and safety of my bed. Hearing "I have a surprise of you...". The rustle of leaves in the trees on a summers day like today.

It would have to be my partner’s voice. It was what first attracted me to him. I still love to listen to him sign and play his guitar while I potter around home.

intoxicating sounds ... the crack of ice in a glass when you pour the whiskey, the sharp intake of breath when that jolt of electricity transfers when you touch the person you desire, the exhalation when you loosen a champagne cork, bird song when you have been awake all night,

The sound of the mic being turned on, echo, squealy feedback, tap tap - such an intoxicating sound after waiting and waiting, drinking to pass the time, half-cut and sooo ready for the heavily anticiapted band to finally come out on stage and rock our socks off!

The gentle tinkle crack of ice in the base of the glass, the involuntary sharp intake of breath after taking a shot, the crack hiss of an ice cold can of beer being opened on a hot day. These sounds are both musical and intoxicating in their own way :)

The voice of Jason Mraz is definitely intoxicating! The second movement of Dvorak's New World Symphony where the strings act as a floating blanket while the cor anglais plays its solo. Classical music speaks a thousand words and emotions!

A live band can do it...strong words that resonate intention in a poem or song....a charming man...damn!
a painting or 5 that I've seen in passing & wanted like chocolate oh, perfume..
beautiful clothes in yummy colours...a play thats stuck in my head & made me grateful for words...
oh & the promise of future mischief & continual cool stimulants for my senses...like all of the above.
whats most intoxicating is the grace of being alive & the awareness to enjoy it.

I’m intoxicated by the sounds of a live quartet serving up a platter of delicious vintage sounds.

Songs ranging in style - Sexy, sassy, sultry. Old favourites to the obscure and to long forgotten buried treasures.

I am intoxicated by music that starts quietly and then grows. Ravel's Bolero is one of the best examples, but there are many others out there. A gentle build-up to thundering, rapturous, hard-out SOUND is always amazing.

The most intoxicating musical sounds are most enjoyed when least expected: a street busking drummer in the New York subway, with rhythmic beats echoing the setting; the sound of a young but accomplished pianist drifting through a suburban window; a Tui calling for its mate on a quiet early morning.

Something large with orchestra and choir - expecially if I'm singing. Beethoven 9th, Mahler 8th, Verdi Requiem, Elgar Dream of Gerontiuis are a few examples.

I find the sound of a good brass solo, whether is trumpet or saxaphone etc intoxicating. Including the one's the used to have in 80's pop songs lol.

Flamenco Guitar is intoxicaating. I dare anyone to listen and not have to move their feet to the beat while their soul dances.

I find the bleeps and beeps of Kraftwerk - totally intoxicating -
The simple melodies, the sophisticated rhythms and beats make this band the most influential in our time.

Joan Armatrading singing in her deep soulful tomes with simple backing that supports her voice and never over-whelms it.."I'm not in love, but I'm open to persuasion" intoxicating lyrics to her music.
Or tune in to any Bic Runga sing a slow melodic song that you can easily get lost in

There is no sound more musically intoxicating than a good bass beat. You feel it in your chest it takes your breath away you close your eyes and you can feel the music.
