Leon was born in Hamilton and, as a child, it was evident to his Mum and Dad that he had a gift for music. For many hours, Leon would sit in front of the stereo and listen to the music of artists like the Jackson 5, The Osmonds and the Motown groups of the 70's. Because of his parent's church affiliations, Leon was encouraged to sing at a young age in church choirs and participate in stage productions within church and school.
In June of 1987, Leon successfully auditioned for the Billy T James show band and moved to Auckland. For the next 3 years, he was exposed to the most exciting period of his life as a back-up vocalist and singing lead vocals in a band with close friend Taisha. In the years ahead he worked extensively in Australia and Asia before re-settling in Auckland 7 years ago.
His laid-back stylish singing evokes the ballads of Steve Wonder, the understated jazziness of Bobby Darin and the sultry sounds of Sergio Mendes and Brazil ’66.
He is a master weaver bringing this eclectic repertoire together with sophistication, as can be heard on his long-awaited debut album: It’s a love thing.
Leon is supported by:
Ernie Semu – Keyboards
Lance Sua – Guitar
Richard Murray - Bass
Hayden Wharewaka – Drums
