The Darling Buds of May by H E Bates directed by Ewen Coleman
The season runs from 24 June – 4 July 2009 at the Gryphon Theatre, 22 Ghuznee Street, Wellington.
Set in the idyllic rural country side of 1950s England where the spring flowers are in bloom and the strawberries are ripe for the picking, H E Bates The Darling Buds of May is a delightfully warm hearted tale of the Larkin family - the roguish but lovable Pop Larkin, his generous-hearted wife Ma (even though they are not married) and their six children and how, amongst other things, an earnest young tax man, Mr Charlton, arrives one hot afternoon determined to find out why Pop hasn’t been paying his taxes. He fails miserably however due to his inability to stop Pop Larkin constantly changing the subject, overindulging in alcohol and falling under the spell of the Larkin's beautiful eldest daughter Mariette.
A large cast with authentic 1950’s sets, props and costumes will bring this story to life making it an ideal evenings entertainment during the long cold evenings of winter.
