Queen of the Whole Universe set to paint the Capital Pink!

The very successful and hugely entertaining Queen of the Whole Universe is heading south for the first show in the capital. Now in its 6th year, QWU® – A Very Queer Beauty Pageant – will explode on stage in Wellington in masses of colour and sparkle as audiences experience more ‘girls’, more countries and more competition for the coveted plastic crown.

Not all of the cast are boys dressed as girls – young, old, gay and straight- every contestant has the same mission, to receive the coveted crown. The evening hosted by Buffy and Bimbo, consists of two acts, more than 50 contestants, and special performances. These include a cameo performance from ex NZ Idol winner, Rosita Vai, and also Jade Neale in a body painted swimsuit, winner of Mr. Gay Wellington 2009. QWU® is set to be a brilliant night out - boasting laughter, creativity and fabulous entertainment.

Jonathan Smith, the shows creative director, has confirmed that the sell out Auckland show held in November last year will be held at the St James Theatre, Wellington on Saturday 27th June 2009.

‘The majority of the Auckland cast will be travelling down to Wellington to combine with a smaller Wellington cast to produce the biggest show yet’ says Smith. ‘We might even break our own Guinness World Record.’

Contestants will battle for prestige in the glamorous ‘Headgear of Nations’ before the announcements of the special awards and the semi-finalists who will compete for the overall title. Wellingtonian Te Herekiekie Herewini, winner in 2006 as ‘Miss Mexico,’ will be fierce competition again this year as ‘Miss Teen Black America.’ The pageant continues long in to the night when the after event party kicks off and both the participants and audiences can mingle and celebrate working together for a great cause. All tickets include a souvenir programme and entry to the post show party at St James Theatre Level 3.

Queen of the Whole Universe raises funds for HIV/AIDS Charities including the New Zealand AIDS Foundation; and is committed to financially assisting important HIV/AIDS community advocacy work not funded by its Ministry of Health contracts. Since its 2004 premiere, QWU® has been enthusiastically supported by sponsors, participants and audiences, having simultaneously donated over $145,000 for HIV/AIDS causes in New Zealand.

In association with this event there will be a QWU® Exhibition in Jimmy’s Café, St James Theatre from 22nd to 27th June.
