Perceptions in Paint- New Work by Jack Register will open on 5th June and continue through 30th June 2009. Featuring his classic paintings of the Manawatu Gorge, the Rangitikei River, Mount Ruapehu, the beaches of the west coast, the papa cliffs, cityscapes and other familiar landscapes of the central districts region, Perceptions in Paint highlights the artistic ability of the artist while capturing the majestic beauty of this area. Painting mostly ‘plein air’ Register has developed a niche portraying the landforms and magical light of the region in his unique representational yet impressionistic style. Perhaps the most well known and popular artist in the Manawatu, Jack Register never fails to deliver an interpretation of the ‘views and vistas’ that intrigue visitors and residents alike. The artist will display approximately 20 new paintings in oil or watercolour to suit every budget. The artist will display approximately 20 new paintings in oil or watercolour to suit every budget.

Jack Register is today one the region’s best-known artists having followed his late father Basil into the art profession. He has made a career in the fine arts as a full-time artist since the late 1980’s after being a professional, self-employed house painter and decorator for twenty years. Over the last several decades his art works have become iconic and sought after representations of the Manawatu and Rangitikei regions. Having a style of painting which is uniquely his own, Register has been invited to exhibit his paintings in New Zealand’s public galleries including Te Manawa, Wanganui, Wellington and Timaru. His work is spread over major private galleries on both the North and South islands. He has participated in more than forty solo exhibitions and as many group shows during his art career. In this region, Jack’s paintings can be viewed at Palmerston North City Council, Massey University, Manawatu District Council and Horizons Regional Council to name but a few. Register was a recipient of a QSM –Queens Service Medal – in the 2008 New Years Honours List for his services to Art and Music.

“In 1988 after 28 years as a successful house painter and decorator I made the decision to become a full-time artist. And I have never looked back. Although a late starter as a professional artist, I have a lifetime of art experience. I enjoy painting in both traditional and contemporary styles; I specialise in contemporary art as it allows me the freedom of expression to paint what excites me, what I feel. Painting on site (‘Plein air’) enables me to use all my senses to capture the essence of the landscape as my brush touches canvas. The connection I feel with the land and for New Zealand is, I believe, evident in my paintings.”

Jack Register has received numerous awards during his art career and has participated in over forty-five solo and group exhibitions. Of special note were his two solo shows at the Manawatu Art Gallery and the commissioning of a work by the Palmerston North City Council as a gift for its Sister City, Missoula, Montana.

Jack Register has had a great deal of acclaim for his work over the years, in 1990 an arts writer penned: “Register has captured the essence of New Zealand with an elusive three-dimensional quality.” The late art educator Alan McIntyre once remarked that Jack’s love for the land was expressed “in the sweep of his rhythmic brushwork.”

Judging from the continued and steady sales of Register’s paintings the public is well aware of the magic that this talented artist brings to both the media of watercolour and oil on canvas. The exhibition will include large oil paintings on canvas as well as small and medium works on paper or card which illustrate the skill and ability that Jack Register’s forty years of experience and creative ability are able to express in capturing the essence of the land we all treasure and love.
