The Fight of The Century: David Tua v Shane Cameron

The stage is now set for the biggest boxing event of our life time in New Zealand.
The prospect of New Zealand’s two finest heavyweight boxers in modern history fighting for 12 rounds to secure the WBO Asia Pacific Championship Belt has been sought after since 2005, but many people thought it could never happen – its happening!

This contest is shaping up as an epic event. “On one side is David Tua, who fought for the world title, still jointly holds the world record for the most punches thrown in a heavyweight bout and has been named by boxing’s Bible, Ring Magazine, as the 48th most powerful puncher in the history of boxing.

On the other side is Shane Cameron, an outstanding talent, renowned for his courage and ranked sixth in the world by the WBO. And an under-card described by the Sunday Star Times as ‘genuinely one of the best under-cards yet seen in this country’.

Waikato Stadium will be covered and transformed for one night only to host the biggest fight in the last fifty years and the biggest sporting moment of 2009. Sunday News has called it the most anticipated fight in the history of New Zealand boxing.

The local rivalry will ensure "grudge match" billing but for Tua the stakes are much higher than local bragging rights. A win against WBO sixth-ranked Cameron will give him a top-10 ranking overnight, place him in a position to fight for the heavyweight title again and put to bed the ghosts of his 2000 defeat by Lennox Lewis.

Get your mates together for the ultimate road trip - to see our fight of the century.
