Combine the five principal wind players from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra with Diedre Irons, one of our most revered pianists, and the result is an ensemble brimming with character and energy.
Featuring Bridget Douglas (flute), Robert Orr (oboe), Phil Green (clarinet), Ed Allen (French horn) and Robert Weeks (bassoon).
“Isolating the lovely part of the orchestra,” is how horn player Ed Allen describes the wind quintet and the addition of piano enhances the individual timbres and provides a backdrop which blends the sounds together.
The programme includes Mozart's Quintet for piano and winds in E flat, Barber's 'Summer Music', together with Poulenc’s Sextet for Piano and Winds described by Diedre as “a great romp” and an Anthony Ritchie wind quintet commissioned by CMNZ.
