'Still Life Paintings' is a breath taking exhibition by Central Otago artist Neil Driver.
18/06/09 - 07/07/09 Preview from 6pm 18/06/09
Formally the works are recognised as realist yet Driver uses his paintings as an opportunity to enhance the best assets of the scene and re-order and render them in a composition which satisfies his hunger for harmony and light.
There is always a quiet stillness exuding from the work, natural illumination, and balance complete the tranquil compositions. They are as much about the arranged still life before him as they are about his imagination, and the innate ability to bring out an ethereal beauty in the subjects.
His preference of subject matter such as shells and fruit are taken from our natural world in celebration which contrast the enamel-ware which represents the working man, triumph, age, and a character which develops as the objects become chipped and worn.
There is an enviable patience involved with such eloquent, timeless work. A slow layering of acrylic tones in a gentle palette which soothes the eye and rests the mind.
Driver's paintings are evolved to a point where simple objects have their own life source, an energy and passion.
