O. Co. and STAMP at THE EDGE® present Lantern

Two actors. Nine characters. 85 luminous minutes.

Chinese New Year – a time by which debts are settled, the house swept clean of issues, and families reconciled. Unfortunately for the Chens, it’s not that easy. Henry is a man broken by war and immigration. His children Jen and Ken are still working out who they really are. And then his wife Rose, who walked out a year ago, suddenly reappears…

Written by NZ-Chinese playwright Renee Liang and featuring an all-Chinese cast, Lantern is not a play about being Asian, or even about being Kiwi-Asian. It’s a play about what it means to be family.

Three generations of love, life and laughter hailing from the East and settling in the West, my family of 8 is definitely the best!

My bliss, my heart, these girls my life.
Two bonny, one dusted by lifes dulcet tones.
    My beloveds, my heart.
Our spirits entwined, intentions are true.
Their love unrequited for me and mine mirrored in their eyes.

    Love 'em or hate 'em,
    You can't do without 'em.
    They're everything you need,
    So you'd better take heed,
They're there for you in your hour of need.

They make me lala/send me nuts -at times I almost hate their guts!
But though my sanity they test, I wouldn't be without the pests!

I can see the way you look at me
I mean the world to you….
    I can hear your voice
    To me ‘that’s choice’
    I know it very well
I can feel strong hands that hold me close
In my bunny blanket, warm as toast
    HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!
    I love ya dad
    Your little girl thinks you’re
    ‘THE MOST’!

The second poem is just for fun!

    Feed me
    Burp me
    Change me too
    It’s three in the morning…..
    Cuddles too?!

When there is either a mother, father, sister or brother
Unconditonal love is what you find unlike any other
The bond stays strong amongst one another
Because blood is thicker than water

There are two things that are certain in life
One's birth name and one's family
You hate 'em and love 'em even more
For the things they do and say
Some may wish for things to change
But for many it's a reality
In which after a long daze
Come to realise their given destiny

Forever grateful, for what you’ve given me
We accept each other for who we are
Together a bond shared, the connection
    Love, guidance, openness, trust
The link in the chain that will always be there

    I don't think you will
    ever fully understand
    how you've touched my life
and made me who I am.

I don't think you could ever know
just how truly special you are
that even on the darkest nights
    you are my brightest star.

laughing, singing, yelling, crying what more can you ask,
blood by nature not by choice,
    learning,working,dancing,eating,
another day goes by,families gathers at feasting .
    mourning,singing,crying
    loving each other,Mom,Dad,Bothers and Sisters.
Asleep in our beds awaiting for the day too begin again.

Writing family poetry is too hard
    I'd prefer to eat lard.
