Johnny Clegg is one of South Africa’s most celebrated sons. He is a singer, a songwriter, a dancer, anthropologist and a musical activist whose infectious crossover music, a vibrant blend of Western pop and African Zulu rhythms, has exploded onto the international scene – and broken through all barriers.

In France were he continues to enjoy a massive following, he is fondly called Le Zulu Blanc.
Clegg used his music to send out a strong anti-apartheid message and no song was more powerful than Asimbonanga, Clegg’s tribute to the jailed Nelson Mandela. His performance of this song today with Madiba as a free man and in the year of Mandela’s ninetieth birthday, still sends shivers down the spine of the audience who are continuously in awe of his fine leadership attributes. Mandela has joined Johnny Clegg on stage during the 46664 Aids Awareness Concerts, a name lent to the events by Madiba from his Robben Island prison number.

The haunting refrain Impi (meaning Zulu warrior) regularly echoes within any South African rugby stadium which, together with Great Heart from the movie Jock of the Bushveld have achieved for Clegg anthem status with crowds in his home country.

Johnny Clegg is a true inspiration. Brave in thought and action in speaking out against the apartheid system in SA. It took true courage in those days to be an opponent of the system and to go against the flow of what was expected of a white man. Loved his music when I was living in SA and would love to see him again now...would bring back many memories...

When I am feeling down, I look to the natural world for inspiration. I admire the view every morning as I cross the harbour bridge. Nature - it's so organic, pure and uplifting. Thinking about the world as a whole really helps me put my little worries into perspective!

Children inspire me daily...with their simplicity, sense of fun, ability to forgive, honesty and love and especially when I am able to glimpse the world as seen through their eyes as they "discover" the earth's wonders : blooming bulbs, "magical" electric circuits, emerging butterflies, repaired friendships, mixing coloursetc. And oh how they enjoyed jiving to Johnny Clegg's "Great Heart" during a study of South Africa and other countries around the world!

Music gives life to the soul... this inspires me!!! It is a reflection of oneself. It brings people together from all walks of life it is magical. "Music is well said to be the speech of angels; in fact, nothing among the utterances allowed to man is felt to be so divine. It brings us near to the infinite"... when you are in the moment you are in the infinite...

Inspiritation is all that which makes you feel alive, that brings out your inner passion - hearing the sound of music, the beat of Africa, watching a small child smile for the first time and teh wonder in their eye when they 'discover' something new adn recognise the beauty in the world around them, that we sometimes are to busy to stop for a second and appreicate in our daily lives. The small things are our inspiration - that moment in time where we can stop and take a breath and see the 'real' world around us.

My two kids are my pure inspiration. We have travelled every year of their life and they have come on top in every aspect of their lives. We have finally settled in New Zealand and unfortunately my husband moved out and the support I’ve had from my kids is so astounding. They have been the rock for me. WE were just listening to Johnny Clegg and you could tell the spirit of Africa just filled us all. There is no other music that can move your soul like Johnny Clegg. The first concert I saw of his was in Cape Town at the university and it’s been the BEST concert ever.

Have LOVED Johnny Clegg since I first saw him on "Radio with Pictures" way back. I LOVE the way him music stirs me and other songs make me get the housework done super fast. He makes the world listen and think. Was amazed that he is still around as I've heard nothing from him in ages but am very glad that he is still going strong and hearty. Would recomend listening/seeing him if you can. Moving music and lyrics.

I am inspired by very ordinary people that take time out to do a little extra for others. My neighbour that left feijoa's on my back door step, the lady that let me in line before her at the checkout or the girl who let me hold her lovely newborn baby on the bus. Expressions of kindness inspire me. Expressions of community like the hundreds of people that turned out for Anzac day in our little town.

I am inspired by the beauty that surrounds us here in Torbay. I am inspired by stories of hope, freedom, a dream for a world that is race/colour blind, where human life is valued and animals are cared for. I am also inspired by my childrens' laughter and a genuine hope that our immigration to NZ offers our children a better, safer and brighter future.

The success of the Green Party in the last election inspired & uplifted me because it showed that more people are realising how perilous the Earth is. Increasing the number of MPs by 50% reflects the public concern.

The 'human spirit' is what inspires me. You see it every day. That instinct to survive & live life in the worst possible conditions & do it with a smile on their face. Those people who make it their mission in life to help those people who are less fortunate than themselves & gain nothing from it. People who are not scared to stand up for what they believe in & make a difference in this world & of course my family & friends. I can't wait to see Johnny Clegg on the 1st June. His music awakens the soul and makes us reach for more. He truly is a great!!!!

I find my constant & ever-increasing love for my darling life-partner to be my inspiration, and I find her bras very uplifting !!
I was persuaded by my mate to go to a Johnny Clegg gig in Bristol, U.K. about 20-odd years ago, and despite my initial reservations (I was young & style-conscious then); found it to be a very vibrant, energetic and thoroughly enjoyable experience, and I would relish another chance, many years later, to rejoice in his infectious and very individual brand of musical fusions .

South Africa is in my blood, in my heritage, in my heart....... returning there one day with my family is what inspires me. My roots will always be where my journey begun & I hope my future children will be able to experience my world, my past - and make it their future. I miss my family every day and would give anything for us all to live in a safe, united world...
