In Antechamber, Holly Shepheard presents a series of small, vibrant ink and resin paintings on gesso substrates. These pieces are more concentrated and intimate than Shepheard’s previous works. They also take us under the microscope to imagine things not normally visible to the naked eye. Their forms allude to cells, veins, placenta, genetic codes and tissue, but they could just as easily be representations of jellyfish and sea anemones or floating fragments of exploded stars.
The title ‘Antechamber’ provides a clue to their conception: a reference to a period of waiting or being on hold. Such a wait implies cool stillness and time lapse, however in a scientific context this could be the weighty suspense involved in diagnosis or discovery. Shepheard creates these works through a process of experimentation and manipulation. She has developed a deep understanding of what her materials are capable of and works with transparency, luminosity and dissolving elements. The successful amalgamation of liquid with solid and movement with stasis underpins every work in the exhibition.
