Rupert d’Cruze, Conductor
Rupert d’Cruze, formerly of England and now resident in Hamilton, will be the guest conductor for this concert. He will conduct the rhythmic and exciting Gloria, a widely admired work and one for which the popular British composer John Rutter is probably best-known. Alongside this well-known contemporary piece, we present the New Zealand premiere of the Mass by Belgium composer Joseph Jongen (1873-1953). Jongen’s work for choir, brass and organ is described as “glorious and radiant”. Premiered at the end of World War II this mass fell into obscurity until it was rediscovered with acclaim in the 1980s. The programme returns to the splendour of the Baroque by finishing with Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks.
