6:30PM - Oyster
By Vivienne Plumb (The Cape, The Wife Who Spoke Japanese in Her Sleep)
Directed by Rachel More (This is Our Youth, The Henchmen)
Cruelty-free pork and the search for divinity!
Dolores Romero sings like an angel; Gaia wants to save the world and Napolean wants to travel far away from it; Velma is into cruelty-free pork, Lelani wants to beat her up and Chevy thinks he can explain everything. But what they all really want to know is who they are, and where they belong in this big wide world. We all have our epiphanies; if only they weren’t so loud. OYSTER is a quirky, funny and ultimately moving story from Vivienne Plumb who is quickly establishing herself as one of New Zealand’s most exciting playwrights.
The Young & Hungry Festival of New Theatre began at BATS in 1994. Since then we have produced over 40 new New Zealand plays for the BATS stage and launched 100’s of careers in the Theatre.
In 2009 Young & Hungry are fulfilling a long-held dream, for the first time ever, thanks to a new partnership with Auckland Theatre Company, all three Young and Hungry plays will be performed con-currently in Auckland and Wellington, three plays, two cities, over 100 young, hungry theatre-makers - we are not just hungry, we’re ravenous!
The unique aspect of the Young & Hungry system is the mentoring programme, where industry professionals such as Glenn Ashworth (Lighting), Thomas Press (Sound), Bex Joyce (Costume), Meggan Frauenstein (Set), Lori Leigh (Stage Management) and Brianne Kerr (Publicity) provide young people with a broad range of skills and practical experience to create, participate and appreciate all aspects of theatre-making.
Join us in 2009 for our 15th Festival - it’s going to be a big party!
