Kathryn Madill – New Work
13 July – 20 August
Kathryn Madill is one of New Zealand’s leading painters and printmakers. Her paintings, drawings and prints focus on fragments and snippets from literature, legend and stories. Her more recent oils on canvas and gesso panel show poised moments in time, ethereal pictures depicted in the softly luminous colours of land, sky and water, the glow of day and the isolating darkness of night.
In 2005 Kathryn Madill and Christchurch poet Bernadette Hall visited Antarctica as part of the Artists to Antarctica programme. On the White Ice Table (the title is taken from “Fissure” a poem by Bernadette Hall) is a series of works on paper and gesso panel responding to this eerie, awe inspiring subcontinent. Building on this collaboration and their Antarctic experience Madill has recently completed the art work for Hall’s soon to be released book, Sul and the Ice King. T
This exhibition of new paintings is a natural progression for Madill, reflecting the allure and inspiration she has garnered from her Antarctica experience. The white landscapes of vast ice walls and crevasses provide a dramatic backdrop for the footprint-less figures that venture across the desolate, pristine environment. In this series of oil and gesso paintings the artist continues to explore a trajectory of allegorical, lyrical like figures and objects set in landscapes laden with meaning and mystery.
