Hawke’s Bay is well recognised for Art Deco architecture, yet important buildings designed by our modern architects languish in our streets. Long Live the Modern celebrates twentieth-century architectural initiatives concerned with the new – new technologies, new materials, new forms, new building types, new ways of living - initiatives embedded with the belief that the new would change lives in positive ways.

The exhibition brings together original drawings and period books, journals and photographs, as well as new architectural models and recent photographs of eleven key buildings from around New Zealand. In addition the exhibition features a section focussing on the works of three key Hawke’s Bay architects – John Scott, Guy Natusch and Len Hoogerbrug – highlighting the diversity of this region’s architectural heritage.

Long Live the Modern is curated by Julia Gatley and Bill McKay, from the University of Auckland School of Architecture and Planning. It is toured by the Gus Fisher Gallery and the University of Auckland.
