Justine Walker, Boris Dornbusch, & Cathy Helps

The Blue Oyster is pleased to present works by Justine Walker, Boris Dornbusch and Cathy Helps that explore lives lived through, constructed by or remembered because of the screen. The exhibitions will open on Tuesday 14 July at 5:30pm and will run until Saturday 8 August.

With Is this Enough? Justine Walker presents a series of video and wall works which investigate and document the pressure to perform. Following research into process, series and repetition in the everyday, her work shifts readings of abstraction and starts to question what it means to be a female artist today. Walker references the often mundane activities that many in our society continue to enact day after day with particular interest in the futility of them. She asks: when is the performance successful? When do we stop performing?

Boris Dornbusch's single channel video Paviljon Marinum depicts a meeting in a former Yugoslavian children's camp. The video was recorded on an island off Croatia during the artist's visit to his home country in 2008.

Cathy Helps Interface paintings explore aspects of internet spectatorship and representation. Helps contrasts the slow and conservative methods of painting with the new and fashionable modes of new technologies. She explores the tensions between technologies and what they can do, between the flattened surface of the digital image that promises of connection and desire, a uniformity of a look regulated by the technology, with a messy painterly surface suggesting anxiety, despair or something darker. Selecting images that circulate in our media saturated environment, Helps examines the way that the screen mediates the way we view the world as well as interact and construct our selves.
