Inspired by New Zealand’s reputation for great music and adrenaline-fueled fun, American musician Mike Scala arrives in Christchurch on Thursday 9th July to embark on a two week ‘extreme’ music tour of the South Island. The highlight of his NZ tour is a world-first acoustic gig in an Ice Cave on the Franz Josef Glacier.

Currently touring Australia, he is recording his new album with help from the members of the John Butler Trio. His previous self-titled EP sold over 5,000 copies and his MySpace page has had over 115,000 visitors. Born in Brooklyn, New York, self taught musician Mike started writing music and performing from the age of twelve. By the age of seventeen, Mike began performing at underground jazz and rock venues across Los Angeles and New York became a prominent independent artist in the Los Angeles/New York areas. Described as “a combination of Jack Johnson, Pearl Jam and acoustic stadium rock” Mike has worked with bands such as “The Rivalry” and “Alien Ant Farm”. He was the winner of New York’s 2008 J. Hutchinson Music Award and he has his own charitable youth foundation funded by his tours.

Mike is coming to New Zealand for more than just a music tour - “I love this country, I’m excited to get playing and I can’t wait to experience the world-renowned extreme side of the New Zealand outdoors”. As well as the glacier gig, Mike will be taking advantage of every extreme-location playing opportunity he can as he travels around the South Island.

Excited tour manager Andy Farmer says “Where else can you ride a Canyon Swing one day and play a gig in a glacial ice cave the next? Big-city New York just can’t compete. It’s 100% New Zealand.”
