Seed Gallery is pleased to present a selection of new works by Tracey Black, Peter Rive and Tabatha Forbes.
Tracey Black’s practice reflects upon the incidental and the beauty of things imperfect; leaving her etching plates unprotected, she encourages random scrapes and scratches to be recorded in her prints. Black's area of expertise is in etching, aquatint and mezzotint. With references to botanical drawing and photographic portraiture, Black's new series, ‘roses are red’, considers the gift of a flower as a symbol of love, and the beauty inherent in its impermanence.
Peter Rive approaches art-making with a strong view towards the object and visual language. It is an open-ended practice in which he consciously pulls apart the order and process of the work. Incorporating gestural painting, constructs, digital imagery and installation, his latest work is informed by a variety of sources, including traditional Japanese brushwork, the urban environment of Osaka and contemporary Western art and design.
Tabatha Forbes’ works explore the shifts in environmental perception in NZ; taking into consideration our colonial history, the introduction of new species and our more recent acknowledgement of native flora and fauna. Painted on recycled records, these works make reference to the global 'green' popular culture. The featured flora and fauna are drawn from historical botanical and natural history studies.
