Rick Rudd was born in Great Yarmouth in England, where he gained a Diploma in Art and Design from Wolverhampton College of Art in 1972. In 1973 he came to New Zealand and embarked upon an exploration of line and form in his ceramics. These explorations are still evident in his work today.
These playful pieces, accompanied by abstracted bottle and box shapes, retained the honesty of pots through his practice of interior glazing. Such attention to detail has always been an important aspect of Rudd’s work.
There have also been figurative periods in Rudd's oeuvre, resulting in pieces featuring animals or human torsos. While some retained traces of the vessel, a number appeared as purely sculptural works with any sense of function removed.
However, Rudd is continually drawn back to create another series of innovative and unusual vessel-based forms, maintaining that his primary inspiration remains the container.
