Marisia Dudek’s paintings reflect an intuitive understanding of the landscape she inhabits. Moving away from conventional landscape painting, her new body of work contains relics and shadowy signifiers of the forest; the works are not reproductions of nature, but interpretations of the effects nature can have on us.
Dudek’s landscapes are fractured and abstracted: imagery is condensed into painterly daubs and facets, light cascades between spidery forms in paintings imbued with a dream-like quality.
Dudek challenges what we recognise as reality. She questions the supposed dichotomy between the real and the imaginary when by its very nature, all experience is mediated by the imagination. She is a storyteller, presenting us with a series of vivid, invented landscapes.
