Doug Jerebine (The Brew)

Original, inspirational and uplifting music of many moods and flavours is about to be unleashed on Waiheke.

Doug Jerebine (aka Maharaj), esteemed Kiwi guitarist, known for his dynamic playing in the underground 60’s acid rock band ‘The Brew’, recently re-appeared on the music scene in Auckland, after a long forty-year absence. During his time away from Aotearoa, Jerebine travelled widely and undertook what he calls his "spiritual search", which led him to India and ultimately worldwide as a spiritual teacher. He is well-versed in traditional Indian music and opened with a prayer-chant at his first NZ show this year in June at The Bacco Room in Auckland.

Jerebine will be joined at Artworks on July 31st by well-known and respected Waiheke musicians—Chris Orange on acoustic and electric bass and Miles Gillett on drums.. The entire set of music on the night will be improvised. Miles is the son of illustrious Waiheke musician and poet, Bob Gillett, who played alto and tenor saxophones with the Brew and was a major inspiration for Jerebine’s spiritual journeys. Miles has been a dynamic force for popular alternative rock groups in USA and NZ. Chris is known as bassist for NZ 70s punk rock band the Terrorways, and presently is much in demand and a familiar face on the Waiheke music scene.

The evening promises an exciting blend of intense progressive rock, with heartfelt hues of an Eastern flavour.

Doug was mostly known as the archetypal ‘musician’s musician’ throughout the sixties in NZ. Recently a gathering of musicians in the recording studio of blues singer Katy Soljak were delighted to find their old friend Doug as the recording engineer for an evening session, recording a unique production combining talents who are appearing in the upcoming Waiheke Winter Blues Festival ‘09.

Doug and his British wife Ganga, an artist of notable talent, are currently enjoying their time on Waiheke. He expresses that his musical and spiritual inspirations are based on his respect and love for his New Zealand roots and the country's inherent spiritualit

Opening Act, local singer songwriter Nikki Ngatai will continue debuting her material with her full band featuring Ian Simpson, Miles Gillett and Chris Orange.
