The extraordinary and superbly talented José Carreras will perform for one exclusive NZ concert on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at Elephant Hill Estate and Winery located in Te Awanga, Hawke’s Bay.

With a stunning coastal location and magnificent views over vines and the Pacific Ocean, Elephant Hill Estate & Winery is the ideal concert location to host the internationally acclaimed José Carreras.

Gifted with a beautiful voice, José Carreras is considered one of the world’s greatest tenors and opera singers of his generation. With a phenomenal international performance career spanning over three decades and including recognition as one of the famous Three Tenors with Placido Domingo and the Luciano Pavarotti, José Carreras continues to mesmerize audiences with his sublime tenor voice.

As a young 8 year old boy, José Carreras gave his first public performance on Spanish National Radio singing “La Donna e Mobile” by the age of eleven the young Carreras was performing on the stage of the Barcelona Opera House, the Gran Teatre del Liceu. Carreras was only 25 when he performed at the London Royal Festival Hall and English critic Alan Blyth felt compelled to write a lauded review that still resonates today - “Not only was his a profoundly beautiful tenor, typically dark-hued in the Spanish vein, but its owner knew how to employ it to maximum advantage and, almost as important, had the vital, vivid presence of a born communicator."

With a montage of stunning vistas from rows of vineyards, the horizon of the vast Pacific Ocean and the iconic form of Cape Kidnappers, Elephant Hill winery & restaurant blends contemporary architecture with the traditional values of wine making and a passionate love of great food.

“We are thrilled to have José Carreras perform at our winery for an exclusive New Zealand concert, to have one of the world’s greatest tenors perform here surrounded by our vines and with the winery and Pacific Ocean as a backdrop it will be an absolutely magical experience” said Günter Thies, Managing Director.

José Carreras will be joined on stage by the Vector Wellington Orchestra, and guest Soprano Anna Leese.

Tickets go on sale 9.00am Wednesday 24 September, 2008.

This is a fully seated outdoor winery concert. A presale period is available from Thursday 18 September.

In support of the José Carreras International Leukemia Foundation, Elephant Hill Estate & Winery is proud to donate a portion of ticket sales to the NZ Blood & Leukemia Foundation.

Opera touches the soul......the people who sing opera sing from their soul and spirit......Opera sends chills down my spine.....and the depth of their notes they reach.......the fullness of sound and the range of opera singers.....this seems one and the same with wine......the depth of flavour......the range of grapes......the character and flavours in the wine brings up memories of other food flavours..........

When people review wines they talk about "notes"...e.g."oak notes", when people review music they talk about "flavour" (or flava, lol). There's a definite crossover. Maybe in heaven we'll taste music and hear flavours.

Music such as this is well enjoyed while relaxing with a glass of wine. Carreras is one of the greats and the whole experience of seeing him perform is well worth it.

Why do music and wine match up so perfectly? They both scintilate the mind and the soul, conjouring up comparisons to other things. Good wine, good music, good friends, good location, what more could anyone ask for.

Music and wine go together like crackers and cheese - you can't have one without the other - they complement each other perfectly. But not just any old music - it must be gentle, subtle, passionnate, but not vehement.

Wine is music to the mouth - full bodied and smooth - it shimmies down your throat in a symphony of tastebud sounds. Music cascades into the ears and into your heart - leaving an indeliable footprint in your life. Together they are what moves the heart to influence the head and bring light into a dark world.

Out perception is best colored by wine and music. When the wine and music match, both improve. When they clash, it can be awful.
