Beats People Movement and Niceup.org.nz are proud to present the debut Auckland performances of two of the most prolific and unmistakable outfits in electronic music, The Bug featuring Warrior Queen from the Ninja Tune label and the legendary German Dub -Techno collective Rhythm & Sound - the creative force behind Basic Channel, Burial Mix and Chain Reaction.
As prolific as he is diverse, Kevin Martin aka The Bug is a force to be reckoned with. Kevin began releasing tunes as The Bug in 1997 with the 2003 LP Pressure coming out on Rephlex / Klein. Last year’s London Zoo released on Ninja Tune brings together influences from Dancehall, Grime, Ragga and Dubstep. Featured are UK soundsystem veterans Tippa Irie and Ricky Ranking as well as rising stars Roger Robinson and Spaceape from Kode9’s Hyperdub stable. Stand out offerings come from Warrior Queen who appears on crossover anthem Poison Dart and Flowdan from the infamous Roll Deep crew who appears on future Dubstep classics Jah War and Skeng.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Warrior Queen spent her formative years hanging about her uncle's record store chatting on the dub side of records to the delight of customers. Now based in London and with a string of underground classics to her name including More Than Money produced by Sarantis Check It produced by Skream, Dem A Bomb We and the afore mentioned Poison Dart produced by The Bug. Currently polishing material for her forthcoming LP produced by her most frequent collaborator The Bug, Warrior Queen is one of the blessed you don't wanna test!
Mark Ernestus and Mortiz Von Oswald, established themselves initially as innovators of Techno in the early 90s with their Basic Channel and Chain Reaction labels and also through collaborations with artists such as Jeff Mills and Carl Craig.
Together they evolved as the Rhythm and Sound collective, developing the Dub-Reggae basslines of their earlier Techno work to create a new sound in Dub, going on to influence and challenge bass heavy music production the world over.
Joining Mark Ernestus on this tour will be Paul St Hilaire aka Tikiman, who began making music as a child, later performing in bands throughout the Caribbean. In 2000, Tikiman set up his base in Berlin where his association with Reggae band, Living Spirits, solidified his reputation as a first-class Reggae vocalist. From here, Tikiman linked with the Rhythm and Sound crew and led him to forge a partnership that would go from strength to strength and produce some of the world's most innovative Dub music.
Don't miss the chance to witness these pioneers of the Dancehall-Dubstep and Dub-Techno sounds, here to bring heavy bass pressure to Aotearoa!
With local support in the main room from the Dubstep Alliance, Stinky Jim and Art Official (Wgtn) and a second room of top-notch local selectors to be announced this will be a night of future sound to be remembered!
